So as we all know, the last installment of the Smutty Book Club was a total let-down. Although Jemina and I were excited at the prospect of rekindling our former glory days of drinking wine and reading dirty books, we admit that we should have done a little more research regarding the drivel that is 50 Shades. It seems to me that there is a serious gap in the dirty book market as it pertains to women who enjoy smart books and also enjoy a little smut on occasion. So in an effort to redeem ourselves, we searched far and wide for books that we found more interesting, more engaging, and well-written. We aren't asking for a Pulitzer Prize winner over here, but we are looking for something to hold our attention.
We have landed on a memoir by legendary groupie (and inspiration for Penny Lane in Almost Famous) Pamela Des Barres. The book, I'm With the Band, is an account of her life as a young woman and groupie in the 1960s; it includes several cameos by musicians of the day including Captain Beefheart, Mick Jagger, and Chris Hillman among many others. I've already started the book, so you can rest assured that this is a major step up. I'm not sure how much of the book is true or if it is in fact an over-glamorized fantasy of a woman on drugs. But honestly? Who wouldn't want to get vicariously lost in 1960s Los Angeles with a promiscuous teenager with a penchant for highly talented musicians?

ReplyDeleteHAHA! I read this book years ago as "research." I was writing an article on Little Rock groupie Sweet Sweet Connie for this Scandinavian music magazine called Soundvenue. Somehow they'd heard of her, and somehow they found me. I demanded an interview with her, but she was reluctant. Finally, she agreed to it, if: I bought her lunch (fried chicken from Dixie Cafe by request) and a box of Chablis. Done and done. So, I went to Connie's home, drank white wine with her, and talked about Edward (aka Eddie Van Halen). She still has a photo on her fridge of him enclosed in a magnetic frame that reads: "Missing Someone?" Her house is stuck in the past. She has kept EVERYTHING from over the years. It was like Groupie Hoarders up in there: band tee-shirts, drumsticks, VIP lanyards, these small photo albums with topless photos of her on the laps of musicians whose faces I don't recognize. Then, near the end of our afternoon together, she asked me if I had any pot... so I politely excused myself and made a desperate phone call from Connie's pink-tiled bathroom, begging my sister to hook me up immediately. When that didn't happen, we smoked these nasty little roaches Connie had saved. OH DEAR GOD. GOOD TIMES. Thanks for the reminder! xo.
ReplyDeletenicole, i want that comment on my wall.

ReplyDelete@Rob - how did you get it on your kindle? Amazon tells me it's not available (well, the UK version does anyway)
@Rachel, US version. That's all I can say.
ReplyDeleteSO want to read this. Thank you for posting. I didn't even want to bother with 50 Shades of Gray. You aren't the first I've heard give it negative reviews so I would rather pass. THIS however sounds awesome. I have watched her on VH1 Classic doing documentaries with other loyal Band-aids!
ReplyDeleteI will have to pick it up, thanks for the suggestion!
